Finite dimensional approximations of infinite discrete groups and topological invariants

Abstract

We plan to give a friendly introduction to the study of finite dimensional approximations of operator algebras associated to infinite discrete groups. Passing to finite dimensional models is important since it gives access to concrete numerical invariants that are related to those arising in the mathematics underpinning the physics of novel materials such as topological insulators.
