MML1018 | Groups and Symmetries |
Teaching Staff in Charge |
Assoc.Prof. SZANTO Csaba Lehel, Ph.D., szantomath.ubbcluj.ro |
Aims |
The aim of the course is the introduction of those notions from group theory which contribute to the mathematical modeling of different symmetries. |
Content |
The course will cover basic notions from group theory emphasizing their interdisciplinary application in elementary geometry, physics, chemistry and biology. There will be details on dihedral groups, symmetric groups and rotational groups, on conjugacy classes and partitions, on Sylow@s theorems, on lattices and wallpaper patterns, on free groups and the graph theoretical proof of Nielsen-Schreier@s theorem. |
