Title:  Geometric and topological aspects of optimization

Abstract: In algebraic statistics, algebraic degrees measure the complexity of an optimization problem, and they are a good indicator of the running time needed to solve such a problem exactly. I will report on recent applications of topology and singularities to the calculation of various algebraic degrees of optimization. Based on joint work with J. Rodriguez, B. Wang and L. Wu.
