Title: Erdős-Szekeres: In search of convex polytopes
Guest: Cosmin Pohoață (Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton).
Summary: In any configuration with enough points in R^d (in general position), there are n points in convex position. This was originally conjectured by Esther Klein in 1933 and then first established by Erdős and Szekeres in 1935 in a very important work for the history of combinatorics, which also (re)laid the foundations of Ramsey theory by this application. Many of the ideas in this work have also been shown over the years to be related to many different topics in combinatorics and discrete geometry. In this talk we will recall some of these results and mention recent advances.
