The BBU Math-CS Contest 2024

Rules of the BBU Math-CS Contest 2024

Approved by the Faculty Council on 21.11.2023

1. Aim of the competition

The BBU Math-CS Contest 2024 gives those who intend to study at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Babeș-Bolyai University the opportunity to undergo a test similar to the written exam that must be taken in July 2024 for admission to the faculty. The result obtained in this simulation can be considered, in the context of the admission examination in 2024 to the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, in the calculation of the average grade.

2. Date and venue of the competition

This year, the BBU Math-CS Contest will be held with physical presence, in the halls of the Babeș-Bolyai University, on April 20, 2024. The simulation will last 3 hours.

3. The subjects of the competition

The BBU Math-CS Contest contains subjects from the fields of Mathematics and Computer Science. When registering for the competition, one must indicate in which of the two fields one would like to be tested. The subjects will be similar in structure and difficulty to those of the July 2024 admission exam. There will be a total of 24 questions, which will be asked in Romanian, Hungarian, German or English, depending on the choice made during the application.

According to Appendix 1 and Appendix 2, the lists of topics of the competition are identical to the topics of the written examination of the July 2024 admission exam. The two annexes are part of these regulations and can be consulted on the Faculty's site at the following addresses:

Appendix 1: https://www.cs.ubbcluj.ro/tematica-matematica-admitere/
Appendix 2: https://www.cs.ubbcluj.ro/tematica-informatica-admitere/

4. Evaluation of the grid test

  1. Each question has at least one correct answer and at least one incorrect answer. There are no "I don't know" answers.
  2. Each question has an associated 'p' mark which the candidate receives if he/she ticks all the correct answers and only those.
  3. If a question has an associated 'p' score and has a number of correct answers 't', and a number of incorrect answers 'f', then:
    1. If one of the correct answers, “t,” is ticked, then the candidate receives "p/t" marks
    2. If one of the incorrect answers, “f”, is ticked, then the candidate receives "(-0.66)*p/f" points (i.e. is penalized).
    3. The score for this question is minimum "0" (if the result of the evaluation of all ticks made by the candidate is negative, then the result is replaced by "0") and maximum "p".
    4. If all answers are ticked then the candidate receives a mark of "0".

5. Competition calendar (the date will be announced on a later date)

6. Conditions of participation

The BBU Math-CS Contest 2024 is addressed to high school students in the 11th or 12th grade, as well as to people who have obtained the baccalaureate diploma in previous years and who wish to test their knowledge in order to be admitted to the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Babeș-Bolyai University.

7. How the grade obtained in the BBU Math-CS Contest 2024 can be used in the admission exam

The grade obtained in BBU Math-CS Contest 2024 can be used as a mark in the written test of the admission examination in July 2024 only if the mark obtained by the candidate in the competition is at least 6, in one of the following ways:

  1. Facility A: Candidates who have obtained one of the top 10 marks greater than or equal to 9.50 (nine fifty) in the Computer Science test and candidates who have obtained one of the top 10 marks greater than or equal to 9.50 (nine fifty) in the Mathematics test will be admitted with a mark of 10 in the July 2024 admission examination. This facility can be availed only by 12 graders.
  2. Facility B: The mark obtained in the competition can be used as a mark in the written test of the admission examination. If the candidate is tested both in the BBU Math-CS Contest 2024 and the written test of the admission examination, the candidate can choose the highest mark from the BBU Math-CS Contest 2024 mark and the written test mark of the admission examination, respectively.
