History of Computer Science
2019-2020
Professors:
Lect. Dr. Adrian Sterca [forest at cs dot ubbcluj dot ro]
You can see your final grades here
or on Academic Info.
Announcements [9th June 2020]:
The grades will be posted here today, late in the evening.
Announcements [8th June 2020]:
Tomorrow, around 3pm, I will post the grades on this web page. For those of you
who didn't submit a report or the answers to the list of 20 questions, there will
be a re-examination on Friday, 12th of June 2020. In the re-examination session, only
the list of 20 questions is used (for a maximum grade of 6). I have reactivated this link
where you can add your email address so that on Friday, 12th of June, in the evening,
you will get the list of 20 questions by email. You have to send the answer to the questions
back to me by email until the 13th of June, 2020, at 23:59.
Announcements [28 May 2020]: You can imagine that correcting
approx. 300 reports plus additional questions exam takes time. I will not be able to
give you any result before 8th of June - maybe it will take even longer.
I will post here further announcements and also the final grades (when I have them done).
Announcements [13 April 2020]:
Because face-to-face school will most likely not resume until June 2020,
I have changed the grading criteria: there will not be a quiz exam anymore,
but instead you will have to do a report. Also, course attendances will not matter anymore.
There are 2 new possible grading criteria for this course:
- for a maximum grade of 10 students must upload
here
a report written in english or romanian about a subject related to the history of computer science.
The subject/theme and the requirements for the report are specified on the link from above.
The report should have 2-8 pages of raw text, times new roman, size 12 font, one line spacing.
Using images and figures in the report is recommended, but the text part of the report should span
over 2-8 pages.
Very important:
1. The report should be uploaded by 17th of May 2020.
2. Do not verbatim copy anything from other sources! I understand that you have to write
about a history subject and I don't ask you to rewrite history, but I am expecting you
to tell this history in an original fashion. When writting the report, I want you to use
at least 6 references (probably wikipedia webpages) and also to specify these references
at the end of the report and also to cite the references in the text. If you write your
report in English, you must use english text references; if you write your report in
Romanian, you must use romanian text references.
3. If I find a phrase/paragraph in your report that is copied from another source, you will
get the final grade 1, so that instead of copying, you should choose the second criterion
(for a maximum grade of 6),
- for a maximum grade of 6 you will get by email in the last week of the semester
(on the 22nd of May 2020) a list
of 20 questions and you have 24 hours to send back the answers also by email.
Those of you who choose the 20 questions criterion
must register their email address on this web page using the following link.
(which will be available starting with the 18th of May 2020).
You will get by email the list of questions on Friday, 22nd May, in the evening (at 22.00 hours) and you
are required to send back the answers to those questions until Saturday, 23rd of May at time 23:59 in the evening.
In the re-examination session, I will only accept answers to question lists (not reports) - maximum grade 6.
Announcements [11 March 2020]: The course is suspended in the period 11th - 22nd March 2020.
If this situation will prolong, I will post pre-recorded video versions of the courses on this
website.
Course requirements:
The final grade is: Min(E+P+B, 10)
where:
- E = the score obtained at the final quiz exam; the maximum score that can be obtained at the quiz exam is 7
- P = course activity, i.e. the number of course attendances; P can be maximum 6
- B = 1 bonus point obtained to the test given during the semester at the course (of course if the student answers correctly)
If the student is not present at the final quiz exam or the test or he/she does not have
any course attendances, his/her corresponding scores, E, B or P will be 0.
The student must get a score larger or equal to 3 to the final quiz exam and a final grade of at least 5 in order to pass this course.
